Built in 1862 by pewholders, the Church has been home to three religious denominations. Since the 1950s, the Newark Union Church has been used for community events such as the annual Easter Dawn service and Old Home Day celebration. The Church is also used for Newark school graduation exercises and choral performances by the Newark Balkan Singers and other groups. The Church is a popular site for wedding ceremonies.
The key to the front door of the Church is five inches long explained by John Findlay, Newark resident and longtime Church Guardian. "Except for the electric lights, when you step into the Church, you enter the last century."
In recent years a committee of caring citizens has raised money to keep the Newark Union Church in good repair. The south side windows have been replaced using the original glass in new sashes. New wooden shutters have been installed and maintenance work has been done on the steeple. Volunteers re-wallpapered the interior of the Church and every summer they maintain the lawn. |
